Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that he had reached an agreement with President William Ruto to support him for 10 years before seeking the presidency in 2032.
In a statement dated October 3, 2026, Gachagua said he was a very loyal deputy to Ruto and had agreed to support him for two terms before making his own presidential bid.
However, Gachagua said his removal from the Deputy President’s position changed that plan and shortened his political journey by five years. He now says he intends to seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election, bringing forward his plans to lead the country.
Gachagua’s remarks come as political activities and succession discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 polls. His position contrasts with the succession narrative in which supporters of the current administration have discussed the 2032 presidential contest.
