Mama Oliech

Two women working at a restaurant in Nairobi have reportedly been arrested after they were allegedly linked to unauthorized transactions involving a bank card belonging to an American woman.

The incident is said to have started after the woman dined at Mama Oliech Restaurant in Kilimani, Nairobi. According to her account, she later received a bank alert showing an attempted transaction of about $375, equivalent to approximately KSh48,600, at a Naivas supermarket.

Concerned by the transaction, she contacted her bank and disputed the charge, after which the card was blocked.

The woman then reviewed her transaction history as she tried to establish how the card details may have been compromised. CCTV footage from the supermarket allegedly showed two women using the card to make purchases.

The women reportedly began with smaller transactions before attempting to make a larger purchase. However, the final transaction was allegedly declined after the bank blocked the card.

Footage circulating online appears to show one of the women at a Naivas checkout with several household items as the attempted payment was rejected. The two women are said to have subsequently abandoned the shopping and left the supermarket.

The American woman later reportedly linked the two suspects to Mama Oliech Restaurant, where she had dined before the suspicious transactions occurred.

According to the account, the restaurant’s management asked the two employees to return to work, where they were subsequently arrested and handed over to police.

The two women are reportedly being held at Kilimani Police Station as investigations continue.

The incident has generated discussion online, with social media users sharing the CCTV footage and calling for investigations into how the customer’s card details were allegedly obtained and used.

The suspects have not been convicted, and the allegations remain subject to police investigations and due process.
