Lawyer Wahome Thuku has criticized President William Ruto for suggesting that the outcome of the 2027 election is already determined.

In a Facebook post on August 16, 2025, Wahome expressed that the President’s recent statements reflect a disregard for the independence of electoral bodies and the authority of Kenyan voters.

Recently, Ruto has claimed that he is the best president in Kenya’s history, asserting that he has revitalized the economy and that Kenyans will re-elect him based on his achievements rather than opposition slogans like “Ruto must go.”

He has expressed confidence that his performance ensures a smooth path to a second term.

Wahome responded to these comments by stating that Ruto seems to believe the 2027 election is already settled.

He remarked, “The way William is talking these days, you would think that in August 2027, we shall all be taking our ballot papers to him to confirm if we have marked them properly.”

He urged Ruto to allow the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to fulfill its role and to focus on promoting his plans and achievements. Wahome emphasized that on August 10, voters should exercise their right to vote, leaving the rest to the Kenyan people.

While acknowledging that confidence in leadership is important, Wahome cautioned that it should not lead to statements that seem to undermine the people’s right to decide.

His comments contribute to the ongoing discussion about whether Ruto’s record will be sufficient to win over voters in 2027.

Supporters highlight his efforts to boost agriculture, stabilize the currency, and reform public finances, while critics point to the rising cost of living, unfulfilled promises from 2022, and ongoing corruption allegations as indicators that Ruto still has much to prove.

Wahome concluded that ultimately, Kenyans will evaluate Ruto based on their everyday experiences rather than his speeches or slogans, emphasizing the need for the 2027 election to be free, fair, and firmly in the hands of the electorate.
