In 2022, Fred Ekiru captured the hearts of many Kenyans after photos emerged, showing him being accompanied to Kapsabet Boys High School for his Form One admission, by elderly relatives dressed in traditional attire.

The images of the visibly tired but hopeful family quickly went viral, becoming a powerful symbol of sacrifice, resilience and the collective hope for a brighter future through education.

At the time, the family’s situation drew national attention, prompting swift intervention from the government.

The then Education Cabinet Secretary, the late George Magoha, announced that Fred would be supported through the Elimu Kenya Scholarship Fund, assuring the public that the bright student would complete his secondary education without financial obstacles.

The pledge brought relief to the family and reassurance to the many Kenyans who had taken an interest in the boy’s journey.

Four years later, that hope has paid off. Fred Ekiru has emerged as one of the success stories of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, posting an impressive performance that has once again put him in the national spotlight.

He was among the more than 996,000 candidates who sat the exams and managed to score a solid B+ with 72 points.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Fred expressed gratitude and pride in his achievement, noting that his parents were overjoyed by the results.

He revealed that science subjects were his strongest areas, although he felt he could have done even better in Biology and Physics.

His subject scores included an A in Mathematics and Chemistry, B+ in Kiswahili, Biology, and History and Government, and B (plain) in English, Physics, and Geography.

Fred said he is considering pursuing a science-related course, citing it as his area of strength. His journey, from a viral moment of hardship to academic success, continues to inspire many Kenyans who followed and supported his story from the beginning.
