The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a 7-day strike notice to the government.
On Wednesday, UASU Secretary General, Constantine Wasonga said that the government has failed to fulfil negotiated and registered Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs); therefore, university lectures will discontinue their services in all public universities.
41 universities have signed the strike notice dated September 10, 2025.

“CBA arrears have accumulated to Ksh.3.27 billion. This is one of the CBAs that have not been honoured. The court had issued a directive for more funds to be allocated to cater for the CBAs, but the government has not yet complied,” Wasonga told a press.
“We expected the monies to be paid before the onset of the September term.”
Also among UASU’s demand is the negotiation of the 2025/2026 CBA as “other education sector members have already negotiated their CBAs and are enjoying the benefits.”
Wasonga says the strike will commence on Wednesday, September 17, and will continue until all the issues stated are implemented fully.
“The Ministry of Education has been playing PR, saying ‘we are going to pay.’ We will respond in the same style, the dons are back on the streets,” Wasonga added.
The notice comes a day after Moi University lecturers called off their industrial action after reaching an agreement with the university council.
UASU branch Secretary General Dr. Busolo Wekesa on Tuesday stated that both parties negotiated on several issues that they had raised and agreed to resolve them on an issue-by-issue basis.
The SG noted that the council agreed to withdraw the redundancy letters that had been issued to the members of the staff.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba in January, inaugurated the new council for Moi University, banking on the fresh team to restore the lost glory of the institution.
The CS said the government took the bold decision to fire the old council that had led to the poor management of Moi University.
Ogamba reiterated that the move will ensure order and normal learning in the university after a long period of instability due to governance and leadership issues that had plunged the institution into despondency.
