Senator Kiprotich Arap Cherargei has launched a scathing attack on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, blaming him for the deteriorating security situation in Kenya. The senator expressed his frustration on social media, pointing out that while incompetence in road construction can be fixed, incompetence in internal security costs lives that can never be recovered.
Cherargei compared Murkomen’s performance to that of his predecessor, Kithure Kindiki, claiming that during Kindiki’s tenure, insecurity was better contained. He noted that under Murkomen, criminal gangs armed with machetes have become more violent, and terrorist attacks from Turkana and North Eastern Kenya have escalated.
The senator highlighted a recent killing in his hometown of Kapsabet, which occurred just 200 meters from the local police headquarters, as evidence of the worsening situation.
The growing insecurity crisis has not gone unnoticed. Reports indicate that over 30 people have died this year in bandit attacks, with thousands of security officers struggling to restore order. The most recent attack in Garissa saw six police officers killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants, raising concerns about the government’s ability to handle terrorism threats.
Public outrage has intensified, with critics accusing Murkomen of prioritizing his lavish lifestyle over national security. Some Kenyans believe he is more focused on expensive fashion choices than on implementing urgent security reforms.
Others have raised concerns that corrupt politicians and police officers are protecting criminal elements, further worsening the crisis.
The security situation has become so dire that the US government has issued travel advisories warning its citizens about visiting certain parts of Kenya. This has sparked fears about the country’s international reputation and the impact on tourism and foreign investments.
As pressure mounts, security analysts and opposition leaders are calling for Murkomen to either take decisive action or step down. Many believe Kenya needs strong, proactive leadership in the Interior Ministry to restore public confidence and tackle the growing threats.
The big question now is whether Murkomen will rise to the occasion or continue facing public backlash. If the government fails to act swiftly, more innocent lives will be lost, and Kenya’s stability will remain under threat.
