Kiambu County Assembly Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke has been admitted to hospital after he was attacked during a public event in Karai Ward, Kikuyu Constituency.
The incident happened on Tuesday, February 24, at Mai-A-Ihii School Grounds. The event had been organised for the issuance of bursary cheques by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi. Leaders and residents had gathered peacefully before chaos broke out.
Mucheke, who also serves as the Member of County Assembly for Kalimoni Ward, was leaving the venue when a group of suspected goons stormed the area. The group started pelting stones, causing panic among those present.
During the attack, Mucheke was hit and injured. He was rushed to a hospital in Kikuyu for treatment. Photos shared online showed his vehicle with a shattered window and a large stone lying on the front seat. Another image showed him receiving medical care in hospital.
Reports from those present indicate that the event had proceeded calmly before the disruption. The motive behind the attack is still unclear. There are also claims that police officers did not provide adequate security despite a request by the county government. However, authorities have not yet issued a full statement on the matter.
At the event, beneficiaries of the county scholarship programme received bursaries ranging from KSh 5,000 to KSh 10,000, while some students were awarded full scholarships.
