Nominated UDA Member of Parliament Joseph Wainaina Iraya is facing growing criticism following remarks he allegedly made concerning members of the Kikuyu community living in Eldoret and other parts of the Rift Valley.
According to reports emerging on August 30 and 31, 2026, Wainaina made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Ngeria, Uasin Gishu County. He reportedly warned members of his community that those who did not support President William Ruto’s political arrangement should leave the region and return after the elections.
The remarks have sparked concern among political leaders and members of the public, with critics arguing that such statements could fuel ethnic tensions in a region that has previously experienced politically driven conflict.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba was among those who condemned the alleged remarks. She argued that political support should not be demanded through threats and called on relevant authorities, including the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), to take action.
Former Bahati MP Onesmus Kimani Ngunjiri also criticised Wainaina, saying political leaders should promote unity rather than make statements that could divide communities.
Wainaina has previously been recognised for his involvement in peace and community initiatives in the Rift Valley. In 2023, he received an honorary doctorate for his role in promoting peace and unity between communities in the region.
The latest controversy has therefore placed the nominated MP under renewed scrutiny, with calls growing for political leaders to exercise caution in their public statements as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
The remarks attributed to Wainaina have not only triggered political condemnation but have also revived concerns over the potential impact of inflammatory rhetoric on relations between communities living and doing business in Eldoret and the wider Rift Valley.
