Kenya’s popular TV series Tahidi High, which aired from 2006 to 2020 on Citizen TV, captured the humorous and often dramatic lives of students and teachers at a fictional high school. Produced by Catherine Wamuyu, the show became a beloved staple in Kenyan culture, giving rise to many actors’ careers while offering satirical commentary on education, youth, and societal issues. Over its 14 seasons, the series featured a diverse cast of more than 50 actors, with numerous roles leaving lasting impressions on viewers.
Angel Waruinge, born Angela Wambui Waruinge, discovered her love for acting during her high school years, where theatre and performance arts sparked her interest. Her early passion led her into local productions and eventually onto television, making her one of Kenya’s most familiar faces in the entertainment industry.
Waruinge achieved major recognition through her role as Miss Morgan, the stern but fair deputy principal of Tahidi High. Her character commanded respect and discipline, while Waruinge’s nuanced performance made Miss Morgan both feared and admired by viewers. The role earned her not only fame but also corporate endorsements and widespread acclaim.
Despite her on-screen success, Waruinge struggled with depression and alcoholism, as she revealed in an interview with Hiram Maina. Feeling lost in her identity and overwhelmed by personal challenges, she turned to alcohol for comfort. She credits her eventual recovery and renewed outlook on life to consciously leaving the Miss Morgan persona behind, which allowed her to pursue new projects, including launching her own YouTube show. Additionally, she collaborated with Tahidi High co-creator Naomi Kamau in a 2007 HIV/AIDS awareness film, demonstrating her commitment to socially impactful storytelling.
