Tragic

Taita Taveta Member of County Assembly (MCA), Hon. Duncan Mshimba, was overwhelmed with grief on Thursday, July 17, as he buried his wife who passed away shortly after delivering their child.

The burial took place at the couple’s rural home in Mwatunge village, Taveta Sub-county. Family, fellow leaders, and members of the public gathered to pay their last respects in an emotional farewell marked by tears and prayers.

Hon. Mshimba’s wife died on July 13 due to complications after childbirth at a local hospital. Though she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, she reportedly suffered internal bleeding, which doctors were unable to control.

“She was fine during delivery, but hours later things took a turn. We are devastated,” a family spokesperson said during the ceremony.

The County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Wisdom Mwamburi, led a delegation of MCAs to the burial and expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the assembly. “We stand with our colleague during this painful moment. The loss is ours as a county family,” he said.

Mourners described the late Mrs. Mshimba as a kind, humble and devoted woman who supported her husband’s political and community work.

Local religious leaders conducted the service, urging families to remain vigilant and seek urgent medical attention during childbirth. “This tragedy reminds us that maternal health must be a priority. No family should go through this,” said Pastor Joseph Mwangeka, who led the prayers.

County health officials have acknowledged the need to improve emergency response services in rural hospitals. According to the County Director of Health, Dr. Agnes Mwakazi, maternal deaths in the region are a growing concern. “We must ensure no woman dies giving life. Strengthening rural healthcare systems is urgent,” she said.

The newborn is reported to be in good health and is currently under the care of close family members.

The incident has sparked a renewed public conversation around maternal healthcare in Taita Taveta and beyond, with several leaders calling for increased funding, staff training, and better-equipped facilities.

The late Mrs. Mshimba is survived by her husband and their infant son. She was 32 years old. Her death adds to the statistics of maternal mortality that continue to challenge public health in the country.
