Three police officers were injured on Monday after a vehicle they were escorting was struck by an improvised explosive device in Fafi Sub-County, Garissa County, highlighting the persistent security challenges facing the region near the Kenya–Somalia border.
The officers were part of a routine security escort for a water bowser traveling along a road frequently targeted by militants when the powerful blast ripped through the convoy, extensively damaging the vehicle and forcing security teams to swiftly seal off the area to safeguard civilians and prevent further harm.
According to security sources, the explosion is suspected to have been orchestrated by operatives linked to the Somalia-based militant group Al-Shabaab, which has carried out similar attacks in northeastern Kenya in the past, often targeting security personnel and critical infrastructure to instill fear and disrupt normal operations.
The injured officers were airlifted to Nairobi for specialized medical treatment, underscoring both the seriousness of their injuries and the logistical challenges of handling emergencies in remote areas such as Fafi where access to advanced healthcare facilities is limited.
