President William Ruto has underscored the need for a state-of-the-art conference facility to replace the aging Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), which has served the country for five decades. Speaking on the importance of modernizing Kenya’s infrastructure, the Head of State noted that while KICC has been a proud symbol of national progress since the 1970s, evolving global standards now demand a more advanced and expansive venue.
KICC has long been a landmark in Nairobi’s skyline and a hub for regional and international meetings. Over the years, it has hosted high-profile summits, trade expos, and diplomatic gatherings that positioned Kenya as a key player in Africa’s conference tourism sector. However, with the rapid growth of international events and technological advancements in conferencing, the facility’s capacity and amenities are increasingly strained.
President Ruto emphasized that a modern complex would not only enhance Kenya’s ability to attract large-scale global conventions but also stimulate economic growth. Conference tourism contributes significantly to hospitality, transport, and related industries. A new venue equipped with cutting-edge digital infrastructure, expanded exhibition space, and sustainable design features would strengthen Kenya’s competitiveness against emerging conference destinations across Africa and beyond.
The proposal aligns with the government’s broader development agenda aimed at boosting investment and creating employment opportunities. By upgrading its conferencing infrastructure, Kenya could reinforce its reputation as a premier destination for diplomacy, business, and innovation forums.
As discussions progress, stakeholders in tourism and urban development are expected to weigh in on the project’s feasibility, funding models, and long-term benefits. The envisioned transformation marks a potential turning point in redefining Nairobi’s role as a continental meetings powerhouse.
