Wahome Thuku, a well-known Kenyan commentator, has shared a photo of the late Muhammadu Buhari’s grave on his official Facebook page.
In his post, Wahome said, “THIS is the body and THIS is the grave of President Muhammadu Buhari.”
President Buhari, who ruled Nigeria during two different periods—first from December 1983 to August 1985 as a military leader, and later from 2015 to 2023 as an elected president—died on Sunday at the age of 83.
Wahome reminded people of a time in 2017 when Buhari left Nigeria for 104 days, officially for a medical check-up abroad.
That long absence had raised many questions and caused political debate in the country. Yet, after years of service and power, the man who once led Africa’s most populous nation was buried in a very simple way.
His final resting place was not in a fancy national monument or government site. Instead, the retired major general was buried quietly in his village compound in Daura, Katsina State, in northern Nigeria.
There was no large state funeral, no golden casket, and no grand speeches.
According to Wahome, the burial followed Islamic customs, which emphasize simplicity, humility, and quick burial after death.
The former president’s grave is in a basic garden plot, surrounded by normal village surroundings.
There was no unnecessary decoration, just a calm, respectful ceremony attended by family and a few close people.
Wahome’s message was not just about Buhari’s death. It also carried a deep reminder to others, especially in Kenya.
He wrote, “Come to Kenya. Just know after all the fame, our home still remains the same. It doesn’t matter who you were, so stay simple. Until we meet, Buhari.”
