President William Ruto’s decision to declare August 27 as Katiba Day has attracted sharp criticism from lawyer and political commentator Ndegwa Njiru. The new national day is meant to mark 15 years since the 2010 Constitution was promulgated and to encourage civic awareness. However, Njiru has dismissed the move, calling it insincere and contradictory.

Njiru argues that it is difficult to celebrate a law that leaders once strongly opposed. In his view, the declaration of Katiba Day amounts to political showmanship rather than genuine respect for the Constitution. He questioned how a government can promote civic engagement around a document that some of its key figures initially resisted.

The lawyer further expressed concern that the gesture risks reducing the importance of the Constitution to a symbolic ritual rather than a serious commitment to constitutionalism. For him, celebrating the Constitution requires more than naming a day after it; it demands actions that demonstrate adherence to its principles.
