The Gecaga family is recognized as one of Kenya’s most influential and wealthy families. Their legacy traces back to John Mareka Gecaga, a teacher and politician, whose son BM Gecaga rose to prominence in government and corporate leadership. BM Gecaga held key positions in organizations such as BAT Kenya, Nation Media Group, Kenya Airways, and the Commercial Bank of Africa, while also serving as Chairman of the University of Nairobi.
BM Gecaga was married to Jemimah Gecaga, the first woman nominated to Kenya’s Legislative Council and a pioneer in women’s leadership through roles in YWCA and Maendeleo Ya Wanawake. They had two children, Udi and Noni Gecaga. Udi Gecaga has held executive positions in top companies, including The Standard Group and Panafrica Insurance, and is married to Jeni Wambui Gecaga, sister to former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Their children—Soiya, Jomo, and Nana Gecaga—continue the family’s tradition of influence and service.
Among them, Nana Gecaga stands out as the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). Soiya Gecaga is a philanthropist and corporate lawyer, founding the Vale School in Muthaiga, while Jomo Gecaga has served in government positions and assisted President Uhuru Kenyatta personally. The Gecagas exemplify how strategic leadership, education, and family legacy can consolidate wealth and influence across generations.
