Sarah K, born Sarah Njeri, is a well-known gospel singer in Kenya who has become one of the most respected voices in the worship music scene.
Her story—from modest beginnings to national fame—continues to inspire many believers and music fans across the country.
She was born in Buruburu but her family originally comes from Kanunga. Growing up as the firstborn in an Akurinu family, she moved often around Nairobi, living in places like Mlango Kubwa and Baba Ndogo.
She started her education in Loitoktok, where she finished primary school before moving to high school in Machakos. Unfortunately, family problems forced her to drop out in her third year of high school so she could take care of her younger siblings.
At 18, Sarah worked as a house help in Dandora, earning only 400 Kenyan shillings. Though it was a tough time, it made her stronger and more determined to improve her life.
Her love for worship began early—she sang in Sunday school and gave her life to Christ in Class Seven, a choice that influenced her future.
She officially started her music career in 1991 with a song called “Mwathani Wakwa Nii Ebenezer.” The following year, she got married, but the early years of marriage were difficult as she faced financial struggles while living in Korogocho.
In 1998, her life took a major turn when she traveled to South Africa with other gospel artists like Ben Githae. During the year she spent there, she furthered her education and worked on her music.
Over time, Sarah K has released many gospel albums that have touched millions. Some of her biggest hits include “Mnyunyizi Wangu,” “Nimekuja Kusema,” “Gacumbiri,” and “Liseme,” all of which have attracted millions of views online.
Today, she is married to an Anglican Church pastor in Nairobi, a mother, and a committed worship leader.
She also hosts a weekly prayer and worship fellowship every Tuesday at Nairobi Cinema. Now holding a doctorate, Dr. Sarah K continues to inspire many with her story.
Her journey from humble roots to being a celebrated gospel artist shows how faith, hard work, and dedication can change a life.
