The success of Netflix’s South African drama The Polygamist has sparked widespread discussion across Africa, with much of the conversation centred on its lead character, Jonasi Gomora. The role, portrayed by South African actor Sdumo Mtshali, has drawn attention because of the character’s controversial actions and the complex themes explored throughout the series.
The Polygamist is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi. The 22-episode series premiered on Netflix in June 2026 and follows businessman Jonasi Gomora, whose secret relationships with multiple women eventually unravel, exposing years of deception and betrayal. The production has been described by Netflix as its first South African “supernovela.”
Speaking about his performance, Mtshali explained that he accepted the role because he found the character’s complexity appealing rather than because he agreed with Jonasi’s behaviour. According to an interview cited by TUKO.co.ke from Briefly News, the actor said the role challenged him creatively and gave him an opportunity to explore different emotional layers as a performer. He noted that portraying morally complicated characters allows actors to grow in their craft and storytelling abilities.
The series has generated significant debate among viewers over its portrayal of marriage, infidelity, family relationships and the consequences of deception. Many audiences have discussed Jonasi’s actions and the impact they have on the women and families around him, making the character one of the most talked-about figures in the show since its release.
Despite the controversy surrounding the fictional character, Mtshali has maintained that his interest was in portraying a well-written and layered role. His comments highlight the distinction between an actor’s professional responsibility to tell a story and the actions of the character being portrayed, while The Polygamist continues to attract audiences across the continent.
