Shocking details have emerged about the man accused of setting two university students ablaze in their hostel, with reports indicating that he later contributed KSh 2,500 toward their initial medical treatment.
The victims, Rebecca Misungi and Felister Francis, suffered severe burns after a fire allegedly started by Felister’s boyfriend during a jealous rage.1Witnesses and local leaders said the suspect arrived at the hostel carrying a container of petrol before the blaze broke out.
As the fire spread through the room, the two students screamed for help.
A boda boda rider who heard the distress calls rushed to the scene and broke into the house in an attempt to save them.
One of the victims managed to get out, while the other collapsed near the doorway as she tried to escape.
Both were taken to hospital and later transferred to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital for specialised treatment.
Rebecca died from her injuries on June 11, while Felister succumbed to her burns on June 13.
According to local authorities, several other students sustained minor injuries during the rescue operation.Emergency services responded to the incident, but the two victims had already suffered extensive burns.
In a shocking turn of events, the same man suspected of causing the fire reportedly handed over KSh 2,500 to help the victims begin treatment, claiming that he knew them.
However, when family members arrived at the hospital and learned about the circumstances of the case, they returned the money. The suspect subsequently took it back.
Investigators were also informed that the suspect had been seen carrying petrol before the incident.
When questioned, he allegedly gave conflicting explanations regarding its purpose.
Before her death, Felister reportedly told her father that her boyfriend was responsible for the attack.
Students also provided information that investigators believe could help establish the suspect’s movements before the fire.
