Shock and grief have engulfed Ikondokhera village in Nambale, Busia County, after a Grade 6 pupil tragically lost his life in River Walatsi.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, has left residents devastated and struggling to come to terms with the untimely death of the young boy.

According to witnesses, the boy had gone to the river with his friends to fetch water and play along the banks.

However, what began as a playful evening quickly turned into a nightmare. The victim is said to have slipped into the deeper part of the river and was unable to swim to safety.

His distraught friend, who witnessed the ordeal, recounted the heartbreaking final moments. “He shouted ‘please help me’ as he struggled in the water, and that was the last word he said before going under,” the friend said tearfully.

Despite desperate attempts by his peers to rescue him, their efforts proved futile.

Villagers rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised, and his lifeless body was later retrieved from the river.

Parents, relatives, and neighbors wailed uncontrollably as they watched the tragedy unfold, with many describing the boy as bright, disciplined, and full of potential.

Local leaders and education officials have called for increased awareness about water safety among children, especially during this rainy season when rivers are swollen and dangerous.

Police in Nambale confirmed the incident and advised parents to monitor their children closely to prevent similar tragedies.

The body of the pupil has since been moved to Busia County Referral Hospital mortuary, as the family and community prepare for his burial. For many, his last cry for help will remain etched in their hearts forever.
