The US government has opened a unique door for Kenyans passionate about teaching Kiswahili.

Through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) programme, selected individuals will spend one academic year in the United States.

The programme will run from 2026 to 2027.

The announcement came from the US Embassy in Nairobi on April 23, 2025.

The aim is to promote cultural exchange and language learning among American students.

Applicants will teach Kiswahili in US colleges and universities while also learning about American life.

The programme gives priority to those who have never received a Fulbright grant before.

It targets Kenyan graduates who are fluent in English and Kiswahili.

Interested candidates must hold a completed bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

Applicants must also show they can adapt to US life and complete the programme successfully.

The Embassy has set a deadline of May 16, 2025, for all applications.

Those studying in the US should apply through their institution’s Fulbright Programme Adviser (FPA).

Alumni of US universities can also apply through their former institutions—if eligible.

Others without any US academic history can submit their applications as at-large candidates.

The FLTA opportunity is seen as both a cultural and professional growth experience.

It allows participants to immerse themselves in American academic settings.

At the same time, they serve as language ambassadors, promoting East African culture.

The selected teaching assistants also attend classes to improve their own academic skills.

They are not permitted to pursue a full degree during their stay.

However, they may audit courses or participate in campus life activities.

The programme does not offer permanent work or immigration options.

It is strictly a one-year exchange focused on education and diplomacy.

This initiative supports a growing demand for African language learning in the US.

Kiswahili, as a major African language, continues to gain recognition internationally.

Kenyans with a strong command of Kiswahili and a love for teaching are encouraged to apply.

The Embassy hopes to see a new wave of educators ready to share Kenya’s rich linguistic heritage.
