Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again lit up social media with his blunt opinions—this time targeting millennials in their mid-30s and beyond. In a video that quickly went viral, the flashy politician questioned the lifestyle choices of Kenyans aged 35 and above who still frequent clubs every weekend.
Sonko, never shy of controversy, said it was “worrying” to see people who should be building their futures spending every Friday to Sunday popping bottles and dancing in nightclubs.
“Let’s be honest,” Sonko began. “You’re 35, almost 40, and every weekend you’re in a club like you’re 22. Is it a party or a midlife crisis?”
He went on to urge older millennials to reflect on their priorities, especially in today’s harsh economic climate. “At that age, you should be thinking about investments, health, and family. Partying every weekend? That energy should be channelled into building something tangible.”
His remarks sparked mixed reactions online. Some Kenyans applauded Sonko for saying what others were too afraid to voice, while others felt he was being judgmental.
TikTok and X were buzzing with reactions:
@WairimuS: “Sonko has a point, though the delivery is wild 😂.”
@KevThePlug: “Midlife crisis or not, let people enjoy their money. You only live once!”
@MamaNduta: “He’s speaking facts. Most of my friends are broke but still at the club every weekend.”
Whether seen as tough love or unnecessary criticism, Sonko’s comments have ignited a larger conversation about adulthood, financial priorities, and Kenya’s modern party culture. And as always, Sonko knows how to stir the pot—loudly.
