What was once portrayed as a dramatic fall from riches has turned out to be a carefully planned move by one of Kenya’s most famous betting jackpot winners.
In 2018, Gordon Paul Ogada, a then 30-year-old resident of Kibera, captured national attention after winning a staggering Ksh 230,742,881 SportPesa Mega Jackpot.
The life-changing victory came after he accurately predicted the outcomes of 17 football matches.
The celebrations that followed his win were nothing short of spectacular.
SportPesa organized a grand reception for the winner, chauffeuring him from Kibera to the famous Carnivore Restaurant in a luxurious limousine.
Hundreds of boda boda riders escorted him through the streets, creating scenes that many Kenyans still remember years later.
However, just six months after receiving the jackpot money, Ogada shocked the country when he publicly claimed that he was broke.
Speaking to local media at the time, he revealed that much of the money had been spent on investments, purchasing vehicles, and building a home for his parents in Migori County.
He also expressed frustration that many Kenyans believed he was still extremely wealthy, saying the public perception did not reflect his actual situation.
His comments quickly went viral on social media, with many Kenyans citing his story as an example of how sudden wealth can disappear as quickly as it arrives.
Years later, however, a different picture emerged.
Reports revealed that Ogada’s claims of financial struggles were largely aimed at keeping a low profile and avoiding the intense public attention that followed his jackpot win.
Away from the cameras and public scrutiny, he quietly embarked on several philanthropic projects that transformed lives in his home region.
Among his notable achievements was sponsoring the education of 56 students from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving many young people an opportunity to pursue their studies.
He also financed the drilling of 14 boreholes in Nyatike, helping provide clean and reliable water to communities that had long struggled with access to the essential resource.
His charitable efforts did not go unnoticed. In 2019, the Migori County Government recognized and honored him for his contribution to community development and humanitarian work.
