Veteran Kikuyu benga musician Peter Kigia wa Esther is mourning the tragic death of his son, Ken Kirehu, whose body was discovered in Gatanga days after he went missing.
Ken disappeared on March 18, 2025, sparking weeks of anguish and unanswered questions for the family. His lifeless body was recently found in the Kigio area under unclear circumstances, bringing a devastating end to a month-long search.
Taking to Facebook, an emotional Kigia shared his heartbreak in a raw and painful message. “Why would someone do this to my child? Why take my son from me?” he wrote. His post was flooded with condolence messages from fans, fellow musicians, and Kenyans from all walks of life.
Peter Kigia, a household name in Kikuyu secular music, is no stranger to grief. A few years ago, he lost his daughter in another painful chapter that deeply affected the family.
Now, with Ken’s untimely death, the musician faces a double tragedy that has shaken fans and fellow artistes alike.
“We are praying for Kigia and his family. This is too much for one person to bear,” said fellow benga artist Mike Murimi. “Losing a child is the deepest pain any parent can endure.”
The police are yet to release details on the cause of Ken’s death, but sources close to the investigation say foul play has not been ruled out. The body was taken to Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary for autopsy and further examination.
Kenyans online have called for justice and speedy investigations to uncover what happened to Ken. Meanwhile, plans are underway for his burial, with friends and fans expected to stand in solidarity with the grieving family. The pain of Peter Kigia’s loss is now a shared national sorrow.
