A sombre mood has engulfed parts of Nyeri County following the tragic death of a female student from Kenya Medical Training College, who was reportedly attacked after spending time with a man believed to be her lover.
The student, identified as Chebet, also known as Shammlee, is said to have met the young man recently while going about her daily activities.
According to reports, the two discovered that they came from the same region and quickly became close. The young man is believed to be a university student studying within Nyeri County.
Sources indicate that after exchanging contacts, the two kept in touch regularly.
Being away from home and in a new environment, they reportedly found comfort in communicating and supporting each other.
On Saturday, the pair agreed to meet in Karatina Town. It is reported that the young man sent Chebet bus fare to facilitate her journey.
After arriving in Karatina, the two spent the day together.
They reportedly shared meals, visited different places, and later went out for drinks in the evening.
According to reports, Chebet had initially planned to meet another friend, who is also a KMTC student, later that night before travelling back.
However, it is alleged that the young man persuaded her to stay longer so they could continue spending time together.
Witnesses say that the two later left a local club on foot after drinking.
It is reported that both of them were intoxicated at the time they left the entertainment joint.
Tragically, while walking, the two were allegedly attacked by three unknown men. During the incident, the attackers reportedly targeted the young man and managed to take his mobile phone.
In the confusion that followed, the young man is said to have fled from the scene, leaving Chebet behind.
Reports further indicate that the young man had been carrying both his phone and Chebet’s phone at the time.
He is said to have escaped with both devices, leaving the female student alone during the attack.
The circumstances surrounding what happened next remain unclear.
However, Chebet was later found dead, sending shockwaves across the local community and among students.
It is also reported that the same young man later went to a police station early Sunday morning, March 29, 2026, to report the incident.
