Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, a close associate of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has spoken publicly for the first time, offering insight into Gachagua’s decision to remain silent and miss the farewell ceremony for Raila Odinga.
In a statement shared on his X account, the senator described the move as a calculated and noble gesture, not one born of defiance or fear.
According to Karungo, Gachagua’s silence carried more meaning than words.
He noted that when the former deputy leader keeps quiet, the nation listens with even greater attention.
His absence, he explained, was not an act of disregard but a display of maturity, emotional awareness, and deep national respect.
The senator praised Gachagua as a grounded statesman whose influence runs deep in Kenya’s political landscape.
He referred to him as a leader admired by the people from the mountain region and acknowledged across the nation, even by his critics.
Gachagua, he said, has always stood up for ordinary citizens and championed their welfare with unwavering resolve.
Karungo further observed that Gachagua’s presence at the event would have shifted public attention from celebrating Raila Odinga’s legacy to political debate.
He emphasized that the day was meant to unite the country in honouring a man who dedicated his life to Kenya’s democratic journey, not to analyze political dynamics or alliances.
By choosing to stay away, Gachagua allowed the focus to remain on Raila’s remarkable contribution. His silence, Karungo said, was an act of respect, not avoidance.
