The Standard Group has sharply rebuked Suna East MP Junet Mohamed over remarks made in Parliament accusing the media house and its shareholders of inciting genocide in Kenya.

In a strongly worded editorial published in the Saturday Standard, the media group described Junet’s claims as not only controversial but also defamatory and dangerous.

The editorial, issued by The Standard’s editorial team, condemned Junet’s accusations as reckless rhetoric that could endanger journalists and erode press freedom in the country.

According to the piece, likening any media house to the propagandist machinery that fueled Rwanda’s 1994 genocide is misleading and deeply insulting to the memory of over 800,000 people who lost their lives in the horrific violence.

“It is tantamount to dancing on their remains for political mileage. Shame on you!” the editorial declared, adding that Junet’s comments send a chilling message to journalists who strive to report facts and hold leaders accountable.

The Standard emphasized that such allegations are not merely political barbs but pose real risks, potentially inciting public anger or violence against the press. The editorial called for responsible discourse, warning that political leaders should not exploit the weight of historical tragedies like the Rwandan genocide for partisan gain.

Junet’s comments come amid growing tensions between the media and political leaders, with debates raging over coverage of anti-government protests, corruption allegations, and political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections.

Media rights groups have also weighed in, expressing concern that statements like Junet’s could undermine public trust in the press and embolden threats against journalists.

As the fallout continues, many observers will be watching to see whether Junet offers a retraction or clarification of his remarks or whether the Standard Group will pursue further legal or editorial action in defense of its reputation.
