Just days after President William Ruto declared a fresh war on corruption, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed that it is investigating a number of top leaders over graft-related cases.
Speaking during a press briefing minutes ago, EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud revealed that the agency is currently probing five sitting governors.
This includes eleven former governors. According to him, the investigations are linked to corruption, abuse of office and mismanagement of public resources.
The EACC boss emphasized that the commission is determined to bring accountability among leaders regardless of their political status.
He noted that the cases under probe involve billions of shillings that are suspected to have been lost through irregular tenders, inflated projects and illegal withdrawals from county coffers.
This announcement comes days after President Ruto accused some Members of Parliament and parliamentary committees of engaging in massive corruption.
The President’s remarks sparked nationwide debate and put pressure on investigative agencies to act firmly against those misusing public office.
Abdi Mohamud assured Kenyans that no leader will be spared if found culpable.
Adding that the commission is working closely with other state agencies to fast-track investigations and ensure justice is served.
He also called on the public to provide information that could assist in exposing corrupt activities at both national and county levels.
This announcement sends a strong message, with both serving and former governors now under the radar of the anti-graft body.
Many Kenyans see this as a bold step in President Ruto’s renewed fight against corruption, though they remain keen to see whether arrests and convictions will follow.
The investigations are expected to shape the public service, ministries and counties in the coming months.
The public will be eagerly waiting for the names of the implicated governors to be made public.
