Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that he previously warned President William Ruto against appointing Kipchumba Murkomen as Cabinet Secretary for Interior, citing concerns over the management of the country’s security docket.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service, Gachagua reflected on governance and national security, indicating that his earlier reservations were not taken seriously at the time key appointments were being made. He suggested that the current security challenges being experienced in parts of the country could be linked to those decisions.
The former Deputy President also raised alarm over what he described as an increasing presence of organized groups, or “goons,” in various regions. He alleged that these developments are politically instigated and pose a significant threat to peace and national stability. According to him, the situation reflects deeper political tensions that risk undermining public safety.
Gachagua called on leaders across the political divide to prioritize the security of citizens above political interests, warning that failure to do so could escalate instability. He emphasized that leadership decisions carry long-term consequences and urged those in power to be more receptive to internal advice and dissenting views.
He further stressed the need for independence within national security institutions, arguing that political interference weakens their ability to effectively address emerging threats and maintain law and order across the country.
Murkomen, who currently oversees the Interior docket, has recently been at the center of political debate, with both critics and supporters weighing in on his performance and approach to security coordination.
Political analysts believe Gachagua’s remarks may intensify ongoing discussions about governance, accountability, and security, while also signaling possible divisions within Kenya’s leadership that could influence future political alignments.
