Police officers struggled to control angry residents in Rongo, Migori County, who were demanding the exhumation of a General Service Unit (GSU) officer’s body.

According to K24, a group of agitated locals stormed their local police station and a nearby church, demanding the body of Dan Ayoo Obura. The deceased, a GSU officer attached to Nairobi, died on March 27, 2025, and was buried the following day.

Accompanied by the officer’s family, the enraged residents forcefully entered the compound of St. Joseph Mission of Messiah Church, where Obura was buried, demanding answers.

The crowd vandalized the church’s gate and perimeter wall to gain entry. They insisted on exhuming the body of the deceased.

A confrontation erupted between the residents and members of the church, prompting police intervention. Officers fired teargas to disperse the crowd, but the residents remained defiant.

In retaliation, the crowd hurled stones at the security officers.

The residents accused the local police, area chief, and church of preventing the family from burying their relative elsewhere. They also alleged that the church had radicalized Obura and claimed that several other bodies were buried within the compound.
