Joy Karambu, better known by the stage name Kawira is a household name thanks to her hilarious role on seasoned television series Papa Shirandula. The Gakoromone school girl is a professional journalist, DJ and actress. But there is more to her than meets the eye. She spoke to eDaily and opened up about her story.She was born and raised in Timau, Meru County
“I was born and raised in Timau an area between Meru and Nanyuki. I am the last born in a family of three girls.” Ironically, she said growing up as the last child “was not so much fun”.
“I could run away from home and look for other kids to play with. Between my immediate elder sister and I, there is an age difference of ten years. I used to climb trees, jump in the rivers, play football, roll tyres. Basically, I did a lot of boy stuff.”
Kawira, went silent for a while after announcing the end of her marriage in 2022. However, in May, during the 2023 Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, Kawira made a remarkable return by showcasing her talent in a skit with the Vitimbi crew.
Despite her appearances on the Vitimbi show, it appears fans are still yearning for more of her acting prowess, reminiscent of her memorable moments on Papa Shirandula.Kawira’s social media have been showcasing less of what she has been up to and some of her fans have been wondering what she has been up to lately.
An X platform user identified as 𝐉!𝐌𝐌𝐘, posted a photo of Kawira with a message that read: “Huyu alienda wapi?” (Where did she go?)Recently she said in an interview she separated from her husband two years ago.
“I said it is a wrap, I quit. When you see you don’t know where the relationship is heading to, you say for the sake of your own peace and that of the other person, you go your separate ways,” she said in an interview with Hiram Maina.
Kawira said she is the one who left the marriage on Tuesday, 16th June 2020 at 4PM.
On why she remembers every detail of the day she called it quits, Kawira said; “That is a woman for you.”
The actress added that she had been keeping her marital status a secret to allow herself time to heal.
“I am almost there but it will take some time. 6 years in the game can’t go just like that. When you see something that you don’t know where it is heading to, you better go your way for the sake of your own peace.”
The actress advised that people should get to know their partners very well before getting married.
