National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula confirmed on Tuesday that his office was in receipt of the petitions by the Republican Party, Dennis Nthumbi, Geoffrey Lagat and Owuor Steve Jerry.

He committed the petitions to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, formally kick-starting the process of their removal from office. The committee has 14 days to assess the evidence submitted by the petitioners to see if it meets the threshold for Parliament to compel the president to form a tribunal.

Further, the Speaker directed that the commissioners should be afforded the right to choose between appearing before the committee or through representation by an attorney. The commissioners will also be at liberty to respond to the petitions either orally or in writing.

Bungoma High Court judge Justice Francis Gikonyo on Monday granted the application by Kombo’s lawyers when he ordered that the senatorial votes in 50 out of the 542 polling stations in the county be recounted.

If satisfied that the evidence presented before the house meets the threshold, the committee will recommend the creation of a tribunal by the President to probe into their conduct.
