A viral video showing a group of female TikTokers dancing in the rain along Nairobi’s bustling central business district (CBD) has left Kenyans divided, with some praising their boldness while others express concern over morality and public decency.

The short clip, which began circulating on social media Monday evening, captures at least four young women in drenched clothes performing an impromptu dance challenge outside the Kenya National Archives. As the rain pours, the dancers appear carefree—some removing jackets, others letting their soaked outfits cling tightly to their bodies—all while a crowd of passersby gathers to watch and record the spectacle.

One of the dancers, known online as Miss Tracy, later posted the video on TikTok with the caption, “Life is short, dance in the rain.” Within hours, the post had garnered over 500,000 views and thousands of comments.

However, not everyone was amused.

“This is a public place. There are schoolchildren, elders, and families walking by. Where do we draw the line between creativity and indecency?” asked one X (formerly Twitter) user.

Another wrote, “Let them dance. We’re all stressed in this economy—at least they’re not stealing.”

Cultural commentators also weighed in, highlighting the generational gap between those defending freedom of expression and those clinging to traditional social norms.

“This moment reflects the clash between modern digital culture and societal expectations,” said media scholar Joan Wanjiru. “It’s more than a dance—it’s a statement, whether intentional or not.”

Meanwhile, Nairobi County officials have remained silent on the matter, though some netizens are now calling for guidelines on public performance behavior in the city.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear—Kenyan TikTokers continue to push the boundaries of online fame and offline expression.
