The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been nominated among 242 Kenyans proposed for national hero status in 2026 by the National Heroes Council (NHC).
According to a document obtained by Kenyans.co.ke on September 2, Odinga was listed alongside prominent Kenyans whose contributions to the country have been recognised by the Council.
The former premier was honoured posthumously for his role as a statesman, patriot and constitutional reformer who played a significant part in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey.
The Council highlighted Odinga’s contribution to the struggle for multiparty democracy during the 1990s, a period marked by growing pressure for political reforms.
His involvement in the campaign for political pluralism came at a time when Kenya was transitioning away from decades of one-party political dominance.
The push for multiparty democracy eventually contributed to the expansion of political freedoms and opened greater space for opposition parties to participate in national politics.
Odinga’s long political career saw him occupy several influential positions, including serving as Kenya’s second Prime Minister under the Grand Coalition Government between 2008 and 2013.
He also served as the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata for several years and remained a major figure in Kenya’s opposition politics.

Another notable name on the list is Pio Gama Pinto, an independence-era freedom fighter who played a significant role in Kenya’s struggle against colonial rule.
Pinto, who was assassinated in 1965, has long been remembered for his involvement in the independence movement and his political activism during the early years of the Republic.
The proposed list brings together Kenyans associated with different chapters of the country’s history, including the struggle for independence, democracy and constitutional reforms.
