Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno has explained the government’s position on its engagement with environmental advocate Truphena Muthoni, following public discussion around her earlier claims that she had been denied a chance to take part in a tree-hugging event in Brazil.
Ng’eno stated that, following a recommendation from his office, President William Ruto on Monday morning awarded Truphena Muthoni the Head of State Commendation (HSC) at State House, Nairobi.
The honour, he said, was in recognition of her efforts in raising awareness on environmental conservation and climate change, both locally and internationally.
After the ceremony, the Principal Secretary hosted Truphena in his office for talks on how the Ministry can support and strengthen her work.
Ng’eno noted that the discussions focused on mentorship and ensuring her initiatives are well integrated into government programmes.
He explained that her work will be aligned with the National Climate Action Plan for the period 2023 to 2027, which includes a dedicated pillar focused on youth and children.
According to Ng’eno, the Ministry sees young environmental champions as key partners in driving climate action and promoting sustainable practices across the country.
He added that supporting such voices helps inspire more young people to take part in protecting the environment.
The PS also addressed the issue of Truphena’s planned visit to Brazil.
He said that in line with the President’s directive, the Ministry will work closely with her to facilitate the visit.
Ng’eno explained that the trip is expected to expand her exposure to global conservation initiatives and strengthen her role in environmental leadership at an international level.
