In a statement issued today, Amnesty International verified that activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, who were seized in Uganda, have been released. Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Minister for Foreign Affairs, wrote to the Ugandan embassy last night to enquire about the two’s location.
Thankfully, the two were liberated this morning and handed over to Kenyan authorities. According to reports, the Ugandan ambassador took them to the Tanzanian border before handing them over to the Kenyan side. This comes almost a month after they vanished on November 1st.
Celebrations are anticipated to rock the country when they return. Amnesty has congratulated the Kenyan and Ugandan governments for their high-level coordination, as well as former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who apparently played a significant role. The two obviously have a story to tell. Until the time of publication, the campaigners had not yet been transported to Nairobi.
