Former World Trade Organisation Deputy Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi has sparked fresh political debate after discussing what could happen if President William Ruto were to select Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as his running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a Citizen TV interview, Kituyi pointed to Sifuna’s growing popularity and suggested that a joint Ruto-Sifuna ticket could become a formidable force at the ballot. His remarks have added another layer to the intense political discussions surrounding possible alliances ahead of the next election.
Kituyi, however, expressed doubts about Ruto’s ability to secure another term through what he considers a legitimate electoral process. He cautioned that any attempt to retain power without a clear electoral victory would expose the country to serious political consequences.
The comments came shortly after Kituyi made a significant political move by joining the Linda Mwananchi Movement associated with Sifuna. His decision has attracted attention because he previously served as a spokesperson for the United Opposition linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kituyi also challenged opposition leaders to give voters a credible alternative as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum. He emphasised the need for opposition parties and leaders to overcome their differences, unite around a strong agenda and present Kenyans with leadership they can trust.
The discussion has further raised questions about Sifuna’s expanding political influence and the alliances that could emerge before 2027. While there is no confirmed announcement that Ruto intends to choose Sifuna as his running mate, Kituyi’s assessment has already fuelled speculation about a potential political realignment with far-reaching consequences.
