Schools are slated to reopen on Monday as directed by President Bill Ruto earlier this week. However, numerous schools are still grappling with challenges such as flooding, overflowing pit latrines, overgrown grass, and structurally compromised buildings. In some areas, bridges have been washed away, rendering it impossible for students to access their schools.

In light of these circumstances, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has indicated that approximately “two per cent” of schools may not be able to reopen on Monday. He specifically highlighted three counties – Kisumu, Tana River, and Homa Bay – as being particularly affected by the floods.

The exact extent of the “two per cent” remains unclear, whether it pertains solely to the aforementioned counties or is a national figure. This lack of clarity raises concerns about the potential disruption to students’ education, with Machogu likely to issue further communication late Sunday or early Monday.

Machogu also mentioned that measures will be implemented to ensure continuity of learning for affected students, including the possibility of relocating them to alternative areas. However, questions arise regarding the availability and suitability of such accommodations, reminiscent of previous instances where citizens were urged to move to higher ground in informal settlements.

The logistics involved in relocating students and providing adequate facilities for their accommodation and sanitation are substantial. While Machogu and his team are presumably working on these challenges, uncertainties persist until his next communication is issued.
