Mr Ruto

President William Ruto has openly defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki while launching a fresh attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, remarks that have further fueled political discussions about the country’s future leadership.

Speaking after a thanksgiving ceremony at Burieruri Boys High School in Meru County, Ruto commended Kindiki’s leadership and questioned attempts by some politicians to discredit him.

While addressing residents in Maili Tatu, the President asked the crowd whether Kindiki was capable of serving as Deputy President and if he fully understood the responsibilities of the office. He also sought their opinion on whether Kindiki should remain in the position, drawing overwhelming support from the audience. Many viewed the exchange as a clear endorsement of his deputy.

Ruto also criticized his former deputy, accusing him of encouraging tribal politics, jealousy, and division. Although he did not directly mention Gachagua at first, his remarks were widely interpreted as targeting him, highlighting the deepening political fallout between the two leaders.

The comments come amid an escalating battle for political influence in the Mt Kenya region as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Government allies have largely rallied behind Kindiki, especially in Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi counties. Meanwhile, Gachagua continues to command support in parts of Nyeri, Murang’a, and Kiambu, where he has been holding rallies critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The rivalry has also sparked early conversations about Kenya’s political future beyond President Ruto’s second and final constitutional term, should he secure re-election in 2027. Analysts believe the struggle for dominance in the Mt Kenya region will remain a major factor in shaping alliances and succession politics leading up to both the 2027 elections and the anticipated 2032 leadership contest.
