The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather forecast warning of heavy rainfall expected across several parts of the country, urging residents to remain alert and take precautionary measures to reduce potential risks. The advisory highlights the likelihood of intense and sustained downpours that could trigger flooding, particularly in low-lying, flood-prone, and densely populated urban areas.
According to the forecast, regions expected to be most affected include the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley, the southeastern lowlands, and the coastal strip. Meteorological experts attribute the anticipated weather conditions to active atmospheric systems currently influencing the region, increasing the probability of widespread rainfall episodes over the next several days.
Members of the public have been strongly cautioned against attempting to walk or drive through moving floodwaters, as such actions often lead to serious injuries or fatalities when the depth and strength of the water are underestimated. Residents living in areas with a history of flooding have been advised to remain on standby and relocate to higher ground should water levels rise, while also taking steps to secure homes, livestock, and other property.
The forecast further notes that the heavy rains may lead to reduced visibility on major roads, disrupt outdoor economic and social activities, and increase the risk of waterborne diseases. Motorists are urged to exercise extra caution, especially during periods of intense rainfall.
Farmers have been encouraged to make productive use of the rains for planting and other agricultural activities, while remaining alert to the possibility of crop damage caused by waterlogging. Authorities have emphasized the importance of staying updated through official communication channels, noting that regular updates will be issued as weather conditions evolve. Communities, county governments, and emergency response teams have been urged to activate preparedness plans to safeguard lives and livelihoods during the forecast period.
