According to locals, the 41-year-old officer returned home unannounced on Thursday night, only to find his 38-year-old wife in the act with another man, believed to be her secret lover. The incident happened at their family home, where the couple lived with their two children.
Eyewitnesses say the officer was devastated and flew into a fit of rage upon discovering the affair. A heated confrontation reportedly broke out, leading to a violent struggle. The officer is said to have reached for his gun and shot his wife multiple times before turning the weapon on himself.
Neighbors who heard the gunshots rushed to the scene, only to find both the officer and his wife lying in a pool of blood. Their children, aged 10 and 13, who were inside the house at the time, witnessed the horrifying event and screamed for help.
The secret lover managed to escape unharmed and is currently being sought by police for questioning. Authorities believe the man may help uncover more details about what led to the tragedy.
Kirinyaga County Police Commander confirmed the incident, calling it a “very unfortunate and painful event.” He urged members of the public to seek peaceful ways to resolve domestic conflicts instead of resorting to violence.
“This is a sad reminder of the importance of mental health and counseling for those in stressful relationships, especially officers who deal with high-pressure jobs,” he said.
The bodies of the officer and his wife were taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
Meanwhile, the children have been taken into the care of close relatives and are receiving counseling to help them cope with the trauma.
Residents of Gikumbo Village have expressed sadness and disbelief over the incident, saying the couple had never shown signs of conflict before.
