A police officer committed suicide after throwing self at the Ndomboche waterfalls in Nyeri.
Constable Dennis Githinji, based at Karatina police station, threw himself in the fall on Wednesday afternoon immediately after throwing his mobile phone into the same fall.
According to a police report, the officer was in the company of two of his friends when the incident took place. Efforts by his friends to persuade him not to commit suicide were futile.
One of the friends tried to grab him but he managed to slip into the waterfall before he could rescue him.
Officers from the county fire brigade visited the scene in a bid to retrieve the body but the mission was halted due to the heavy rains.
Confirming the incident, Nyeri Police Commander said they have launched investigations into the incident. It is not clear what made the officer to end his life.
The police boss that the government will fence the waterfall to ensure such incidences do not occur in future.
