Police have discovered huge amounts of money in the homes of suspects arrested in connection with the brutal killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
The cash, described as “wads of notes,” was seized on Thursday when detectives raided homes in Nairobi. Officers even brought in money-counting machines to process the large sums.
Among those arrested is a senior government official. He is one of six people now in custody as investigators dig deeper into what police believe could be a murder linked to unresolved financial disputes.
As of now, preliminary investigations point to a financial matter gone sour as the possible reason behind the murder.
Some of those questioned have told police they were close friends of the lawyer, while others are said to have been his clients. Investigators are now trying to piece together why Mbobu met some of them at a restaurant just hours before his death.
Mbobu was gunned down on September 9 while driving along Magadi Road. A gunman on a motorcycle sprayed him with bullets at close range, killing him instantly before escaping with an accomplice.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered a fast-tracked probe and demanded a full report within seven days. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned the murder, promising justice will be served.
Police say they are still searching for the firearm used and other suspects believed to have planned the gangland-style execution.
