ruto in ICC

President William Ruto’s latest move to set up a new anti-corruption multi-agency team has already hit a storm, after a group of petitioners rushed to court seeking to block its formation. The petitioners argue that the team, which was unveiled last week with much publicity, is unconstitutional and duplicates the work of already existing institutions such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to the court documents, the petitioners claim that Ruto’s team is likely to be used as a political tool rather than an independent body to fight graft. They say the country already has enough agencies tasked with fighting corruption and that what is lacking is the political goodwill to allow them to work freely without interference.

The petitioners also noted that creating parallel teams will only cause confusion, waste resources, and derail the war on graft. They want the court to issue conservatory orders stopping the team’s operations until the matter is heard and determined.

On his part, President Ruto has defended the decision, insisting that the new multi-agency approach is aimed at sealing loopholes and ensuring coordination among existing bodies. He maintains that Kenyans are tired of endless corruption scandals and need to see real results, not excuses.

The matter is now before the High Court, and all eyes are on the judges to see whether they will halt the President’s plan or give it the green light. For many Kenyans, the fight against corruption remains a top priority, and the outcome of this case could shape the next phase of Ruto’s administration.
