The Israeli military Israel Defense Forces has launched an investigation after a photograph emerged showing a soldier behaving disrespectfully toward a religious statue in southern Lebanon Lebanon.

The image reportedly shows the soldier smoking and placing a cigarette in the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue Virgin Mary statue in the village of Debel.

Military officials said the matter is being treated with seriousness. They confirmed that the conduct seen in the image does not reflect the values expected of soldiers.

The incident is said to have occurred in an area under Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon. It comes amid ongoing tensions in the region.

Reports indicate this is not an isolated case. A similar incident was previously reported in the same village involving damage to a statue of Jesus.

Religious leaders in the Holy Land have strongly condemned the act. The Custodia Terrae Sanctae called the behaviour disrespectful and unacceptable.

They urged authorities to act decisively and prevent similar incidents in the future. They also called for respect for all religious symbols.

The Israeli military said it respects freedom of religion and protects holy sites across all faiths. It added that disciplinary action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

The case comes as Israeli forces continue operations in southern Lebanon involving Hezbollah Hezbollah despite a ceasefire agreement.

Tensions remain high, with continued exchanges of fire reported across the border. Both sides have accused each other of violations.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken once findings are concluded.
