Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi on Saturday donated Sh1 million to the family of the late Lt. Col. (Rtd) Pilot George Were during an emotional burial ceremony in Nyakach Constituency, Kisumu County.

The outspoken legislator also contributed Sh200,000 to the church choir that led hymns and worship during the solemn ceremony held at Kadiang’a Village near Sondu Town.

Family members, friends, and leaders gathered to pay tribute to Lt. Col. (Rtd) Pilot George Were, whose military service and discipline were repeatedly praised by speakers during the burial.

Sudi described the late pilot as a patriotic Kenyan who served the nation with honour, courage and dedication throughout his career in the military.

He said the country had lost a man whose life reflected integrity, professionalism and commitment to duty.

“As we lay to rest Lt. Col. (Rtd) Pilot George Were, OGW, we remember a life that left an indelible mark,” Sudi said while addressing mourners.

The MP said the late pilot’s discipline and service would remain an inspiration to many young Kenyans aspiring to serve the country.

During the ceremony, Sudi also used the platform to urge political leaders to embrace peaceful engagement, especially as political temperatures continue to rise in the country.

He specifically called on opposition leaders Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa, who were present at the burial, to champion politics that unite rather than divide Kenyans.

According to the MP, leaders have a responsibility to maintain peace and protect the country from unnecessary political tension.

“Let us practice politics of peace and focus on development that benefits ordinary citizens,” he told mourners.

Several leaders who attended the burial praised the late Were as a disciplined officer who carried himself with humility even after retiring from active service.

Community members described him as a respected figure whose life touched many both in the military and within the Nyakach community.

Mourners also remembered him as a devoted family man who valued unity and faith.
