Oburu Odinga has moved to calm growing tensions within the Odinga family following the recent appointment of Mama Ida Odinga as Kenya’s Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme. The appointment, made by President William Ruto, triggered public debate and exposed differences among family members.
Speaking on Saturday, Oburu said the family remains united despite reports suggesting otherwise. He explained that disagreements are normal in any family, especially one with a long political history. According to him, there is no crisis that cannot be resolved through open discussion and mutual respect.
A family meeting has been scheduled for February 1. Oburu said the meeting will give all members, especially younger ones, a chance to share their views freely. He noted that listening is key at this stage and that the goal is to restore harmony and trust within the family.
Tensions became visible after some family members expressed surprise over Mama Ida’s appointment. Concerns were raised that consultations may not have been wide enough. These reactions quickly spilled into the public space, drawing national attention due to the family’s influence in Kenyan politics.
The situation comes barely three months after the death of Raila Odinga, a moment that left both a personal and political gap. Since then, differences have emerged over the future direction of the ODM party and its relationship with the ruling administration.
Raila Odinga’s children, Raila Junior and Winnie Odinga, have recently taken more vocal positions. They have questioned ODM’s cooperation with the government and called for a clearer and more independent political path ahead of the 2027 elections. Their views have resonated with sections of the party, especially younger supporters.
