Comedian and TV presenter Oga Obinna got into a bit of a mess this week after an unplanned run-in with teachers at his kids’ school. The father-of-two took to social media to expose his kids had been scolded by educators for an issue which, as it transpired, was completely his fault — and he didn’t take it well.
It started, Obinna said, when he failed to complete a school assignment — signing what was assumed to be a permission slip and returning some materials required for a class project. The teachers, not knowing the mistake, scolded his children in front of their peers, embarrassing and angering them.
When I found out my children were being screamed at for something I was supposed to have done, I went myself,” Obinna wrote in an open Facebook post. “I will not let one individual make my children feel less than due to an adult’s mistake — even if the adult is me.”.
Campus witnesses characterized the comedian as showing up on campus in a confident but peaceful manner. He requested to talk to the teachers in question, inquiring for the reason why his children were disciplined without calling him as the parent. “I have a lot of respect for teachers and what they do,” he went on, “but children should not be punished for something they have no control over.”
The matter has been pending in the news since then, with some parents testifying in confirmation that schools have to handle such cases more sensitively. Others also noted that Obinna could have saved himself the whole ordeal if he were a more responsible parent.
Finally, the comedian says he’s buried the hatchet with the teachers — but that the experience will be a lesson: “Before you correct a child, make sure the mistake isn’t the parent’s.”
