A quiet community has been left in shock following the sudden death of a 50-year-old married man under unclear circumstances.
Julius Mwale had left his home after informing his wife, Tasila Tembo, that he was going out to look for casual work with a friend.
Nothing about his departure raised concern, as it appeared to be a normal routine.
However, events later took an unexpected turn.
According to reports, Mwale spent the evening socialising with friends. The group is said to have shared a meal before buying several small bottles of a strong locally brewed alcoholic drink.
At some point earlier in the evening, Mwale had also been given another traditional beverage, though its contents remain unknown.
As the night progressed, his friends eventually left, but Mwale chose not to return home.
Instead, he went to the house of a woman identified as Anna, believed to have been his romantic partner. It is reported that he decided to spend the night there to help guard her harvested maize, a common practice in rural areas where farm produce is vulnerable to theft.
Hours later, the situation took a tragic turn.
At around 2 a.m., Anna was awakened by what she described as unusually loud snoring. When she tried to wake him, he did not respond.
Alarmed, she quickly alerted the village headman, who in turn contacted Mwale’s relatives and the police.
Authorities who arrived at the scene found Mwale seated but unresponsive. He was declared dead at the location.
His body was later moved to the mortuary at St Francis Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing, particularly regarding the drinks Mwale consumed earlier in the night.
The incident has left many in disbelief, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death.
What began as a routine outing ended in tragedy, leaving behind a grieving family and a story marked by both mystery and difficult truths.
