The family of Professor Lukoye Atwoli has laid his late wife, Maureen Nyadida Lukoye, to rest following her death after a long battle with cancer.
Maureen, who was married to the renowned psychiatrist for more than two decades, was cremated as her family and close friends gathered to bid her farewell.
Her death was announced by Lukoye on Tuesday, September 8, through a short but emotional message that showed the deep pain he was experiencing.
The professor shared a heartfelt farewell to his wife, saying he would struggle to come to terms with her absence.
Maureen had reportedly battled cancer for about four years. During her illness, she and Lukoye had previously spoken about the challenges they faced as a family and the support they offered each other.
The couple had maintained a relatively private family life despite Lukoye being a well known figure in Kenya’s medical and academic circles. Their relationship began in 2001 after they met at a friend’s wedding in Nakuru.
At the time, Maureen was involved with the bridal team while Lukoye was helping coordinate activities on the groom’s side. What started as a simple introduction eventually developed into a relationship, with the two later getting married.
Their marriage was blessed with four sons, and the couple occasionally shared glimpses of their family life with the public.
Maureen also built a career of her own, including working at the National Social Security Fund where she was involved in areas such as compliance, strategy and organisational change. She was also interested in counselling and mental health issues.
Her passing has attracted messages of sympathy from friends, colleagues and members of the medical fraternity, many of whom have stood with Lukoye during the difficult period.
For Lukoye, the cremation marked another painful chapter in a journey that began more than two decades ago when he first met Maureen. Their marriage had survived different challenges, including her prolonged illness.
As the family mourns, Maureen is remembered not only as Lukoye’s wife but also as a mother, professional and woman who quietly built a life away from the public spotlight.
