A major breakthrough has been made after detectives in Nairobi finally arrested a well-known fraudster who had been on the run.
The suspect, identified as Abraham Kimeli, was nabbed in his hideout after conning a woman of Sh130,000 while pretending to be a top government aide.In February 2024, the victim, a Kenyan woman working in Lebanon, connected with a man on TikTok using the name City Tycoon.
She confided in him about her wish to secure a permanent job in Kenya to avoid going back to Lebanon when her contract ended.
The man introduced himself as a personal assistant to the Head of Public Service and offered to help.
Police revealed that the suspect convinced the woman with fake documents that appeared to come from the Public Service Commission.Trusting him, she began sending money as facilitation fees. With her employer’s help, she wired the money through Western Union, only to later discover that she had been conned.
The woman lost a total of Sh130,000 to the fraudster, who immediately cut communication.
After weeks of investigation and forensic tracking, detectives traced him to his Nairobi hideout, where he was arrested.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and will be charged in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has since warned Kenyans to be cautious when seeking jobs online and to verify opportunities through official government channels to avoid falling prey to such scams.
